There are several tested and proven methods of how to remove those pesky tonsil stones using over the counter products. Let’s talk about the easier and simplest one first:
TonsilStonesHQ’s most trusted provider for all your dental hygiene is TheraBreath (and we have a negotiated a special 10% discount for you – just use the codeUse Code ATB10Off):
Here are the things you’ll need:

- Cotton Swabs
- Oxygenating Mouthwash
- Nasal Spray
- Oxygenating Toothpaste
Now, the action plan:
- Moisten the cotton swab with water. Be sure it’s not dripping wet.
- Hold your mirror and small flashlight in the same hand in front of your face with your mouth wide open so you can see well into the back of your throat.
- Sweep each tonsil crypt where you see or feel tonsil stones hiding. Be sure you don’t push the stones further into your tonsil crypts. You can also gently poke the outer fold of the tonsil crypt to force out stones.
- Rinse and gargle with an oxygenating mouthwash
once you’ve successfully removed each stone seen or felt.
Now that you are “tonsil stones free”, you need to stay that. Use the following products to get rid of your tonsil stones for good:
- Nasal Spray
– because tonsil stones are made up partially of post nasal drips, these nasal drops can be very effective in preventing future tonsil stones. Follow instructions on the box
- Oxygenating Toothpaste
Follow instructions carefully as you do not need water and need to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner before brushing.
Our next method involved an Oral Irrigator – if you’re not comfortable with electric toothbrushes or other electrical dental appliances, this method might not be for you:

Dr. Katz Hygienator Oral Irrigator
Here is the action plan:
- Fill the reservoir of your oral irrigator with lukewarm water.
- Open your mouth wide and look into the mirror with a flashlight so you can locate any visible tonsil stones.
- Turn on your oral irrigator and set to its lowest setting.
- Irrigate your tonsil crypts with the water that pulsates from your oral irrigator. This should flush out the tonsil stones you saw earlier.
- Rinse and gargle with an oxygenating mouthwash
once you have satisfactorily removed each tonsil stone.
Please feel free to leave a comment and tell us about your experience.
Why would we want to use this Oral Irrigator vs the Cotton swab method?
Great question, Dennis.
Basically, if you feel comfortable around an electric toothbrush, oral irrigator method is probably easier and quicker. If not – manual cotton swab method is your best bet. The good thing about the irrigator that you can can also use it to clear away any plaque as well.
I’ve tried the cotton swab method and it worked just fine. My problem is though that I really don’t like the nasal spray and the toothpaste. Is there anything else you can recommend that can do the job permanently?
Martha,
Thanks for your question. The problem with hygiene products is unless you keep on using them, tonsil stones might become a problem again down the road.
I would suggest you take a look at our recommended Tonsil Stones programs. All of the reviewed program are 100% natural and have shown great results.
