Schedule an appointment with either a Nurse practitioner or an Ear Nose and Throat Doctor (ENT). While at the doctor’s office ask about getting a prescription for an anti-bacterial mouthwash to help prevent the formation of new tonsil stones.

Here’s what to expect during your visit:

  • A doctor can remove the stones using forceps, this should be a straight forward procedure and shouldn’t take the doctor more than 30 minutes.
  • A doctor might recommend undergoing a procedure called laser cryptolysis, which closes the pockets in your tonsils.  This procedure can be either be performed at a doctor’s office or in the hospital, which might require another appointment
  • In some extreme cases, a deeply embedded tonsil stone will have to be removed surgically. In these cases, the tonsil stone needs to be dug out using ear curettes, used to remove ear wax, which is a type of pick.  Again, this procedure can be done either at the office or in the outpatient surgery module at the hospital.
  • Other devices, such as bobby pins, might have to be used, though there is a risk of infection, as with any surgical procedure.
  • A doctor might also recommend “Laser resurfacing”, which can help shave off tonsil stones. The laser vaporizes and removes the outer layer of the tonsils and will also flatten the stones.
  • And finally If none of these work – discuss the possibility of having your tonsils removed with your doctor. A tonsillectomy is only performed in cases where tonsil stones are so severely embedded in the tonsils that removal is difficult or impossible without causing damage to the tonsils.  Once the tonsils are removed, tonsil stones will no longer form inside your throat.

When I was young, my tonsils were removed. I DO get tonsil stones. So if I no longer have tonsils, is my case worse and should I have my lingual tonsils out. I will undergo surgery if need be.
